1957: The Birth of the Perceptron

The Perceptron was one of the earliest models for machine learning, created by Frank Rosenblatt in 1957. It was a simple mathematical model that could recognize patterns, like distinguishing different shapes or letters. Imagine it as a basic neuron in the brain that takes some input, processes it, and gives an output.

How the Perceptron Works:

  1. Inputs: Imagine we want to recognize a cat. The Perceptron takes features of the cat (like its ears, eyes, and whiskers) as inputs.
  2. Weights and Bias: It then multiplies each input by a weight (like giving more importance to the shape of the ears) and adds a bias.
  3. Output: Finally, it produces an output that helps in deciding if it’s a cat or not.

The Limitations and Criticism:

The Perceptron was groundbreaking but had limitations. It could only solve simple problems and couldn’t handle complex patterns or relationships. This led to a period of doubt and criticism about the capabilities of AI.
